How to Build a DIY Hoverboard

John Hoverboard FAQ Updated: February 22, 2024

How to Make a DIY Hoverboard?

Whether you’re concerned with having the right components in your hoverboard, you want to repair your hoverboard, or you’re just a natural-born tinkerer, the prospect of making your own DIY hoverboard sure can be exciting.

The nice thing is that you can choose the level of complexity of your project: you can really delve into it and build your own motors, frame and battery pack or you can use pre-made inexpensive components to create a hoverboard that’s virtually indistinguishable from one bought on Amazon.

The latter approach is what we’re going to discuss in this article. But first, a little disclaimer:

WARNING: Making your own DIY Hoverboard could be dangerous. You may use this guide AT YOUR OWN RISK. BestElectricHoverboard.com declines any responsibility for any damage to persons and physical objects caused by the improper use of this guide or of the parts therein described, or any other factory defect of the components and such. You have been warned.

What am I gonna need?

Tools

  • A Phillips screwdriver (if you have one of those screwdriver sets with different sizes, you’ll be better off).
  • Metric Allen key (for the motor clamp mounts).
  • Silicon-based glue.

Parts

  • Logic board
  • Gyroscope modules (also called Attitude Boards).
  • LED lights (both status and front lights).
  • Power connector.
  • Power button.
  • 2x Wheel/Motor.
  • Axle clamps for the frame + bolts.
  • Li-Ion battery.
  • Aluminum Frame.
  • Rubber foot pads and rubber pressure switches.
  • Plastic mounts for attitude boards and pressure switches (and plastic battery cage).
  • Hoverboard shell (in whichever color you prefer).
  • Charger.
  • Screws for the whole assembly.

Let’s look at the individual parts.

Thankfully, quite a few companies sell “Hoverboard Repair Kits” which are relatively inexpensive and come with pretty much all of the electronics you need.

We recommend going with one of these kits, as some logic boards have PWM (power management) ports for the gyroscope modules, and some don’t: ordering a kit will ensure you have attitude modules that are compatible with your specific logic board module.

Next up we have the frame, which is what’s gonna hold all of our components.

The wheels (which also house the motors — check out our article “How do Hoverboards Work?” for more info), are up next. You have a choice of what kind of wheels to use, which will determine some other options down the line. You can get either 6.5 inch wheels (like a “regular” hoverboard), 8 inch wheels (like the “x-design” bluetooth hoverboards) or 10 inch wheels (the tallest, fastest hoverboard).

The battery is a Lithium-Ion battery pack, at a voltage of 36V and with 4.4Ah of capacity. Buy a hoverboard replacement battery pack from a reputable seller as this is a crucial component for the safety of your board (read more here about the Hoverboard Fires).

Then we have the rubber parts of the board. These are the footrests, and the connected pressure switches.

The plastic mounts are used to prop up the attitude boards, and for the pressure switches to do their magic.

The shell, you can select based on the wheel size of your hoverboard, and based of course on your color preference.

Hoverboard Shell

The charger is the final component, and another crucial one for safety. We never had a problem with this one.

Let’s get building!

How to Make a Hoverboard – Assembly

Grab your hoverboard aluminum frame and place it on your work surface right side up.

Place the logic board on the left side of the board. There will be four screw mounts. Line the board up and screw it in place with x4 M4 10mm Phillips screws.

Next, pass the cables through the middle pivot point in the frame.

DIY Hoverboard Step 1

Mount the four rubber switches on their sockets and screw them in place.

DIY Hoverboard Step 2

Now, place the battery on the right side of the frame, and mount the plastic cage on top of it.

DIY Hoverboard Step 3

Set aside your hoverboard frame and let’s take a look at the hoverboard’s top shell.

With the shell upside down, screw in place the CROSS LED on the right side of the shell (it’ll be the battery indicator LED).

DIY Hoverboard Step 6

Then, mount the ROUND LED on the left side of the shell (it’ll be the balance indicator LED).

DIY Hoverboard Step 5

Set the shell aside, and grab your hoverboard frame again. This time, flip it upside down.

Place the rubber footpads on the hoverboard frame.

Grab the top shell, and put it on top of the rubber pads, onto the frame, making sure that the LED Battery indicator is on the same side as the battery itself.

Make sure to pass the cables for the LED indicators through the square holes in the aluminum frame itself.

DIY Hoverboard Step 7

Flip the hoverboard over and screw the shell in place.

Now, we grab our wheels/motors.

Place the motor with the axle on the frame, making sure that the flat side is facing you (up).

DIY Hoverboard Step 8

Fix the wheels in place by screwing on the axle clamps with an Allen key. Make sure the wheels are not rubbing against the frame, and, once the fit is secure, tighten the bolts.

DIY Hoverboard Step 9

Once this is done, put your hoverboard aside for a second, and screw the attitude board, or sensor plates, on their plastic bracket mounts. Obviously, you want the wiring to go on the ‘cutout’ side.

Next up, the wiring.

Hoverboard Wiring

What you wanna do is wire the motor on the side of the logic board first.

Different manufacturers use different color wires, but in general, the idea is to match the wire colors.

So plug the motor connectors — green to green, yellow to yellow and blue to blue.

Make sure the little green sleeves on these connectors overlap so that you have a nice insulated fit.

DIY Hoverboard Step 10

Then, plug the speed control in.

Now, grab the attitude board that you mounted on the plastic bracket and place it on top of the rubber switches with the wires going towards the center of your self balancing scooter. Screw it in place with the four screws at the corners.

Plug the attitude board to the cable from the logic board.

DIY Hoverboard Step 11

Finally plug the wire coming from the shell LED indicator onto the white connector on the attitude board (if the logic board is on your left side, it’s the connector closest to you).

Now plug the other side’s motor connectors.

DIY Hoverboard Step 12

Set your hoverboard frame aside and let’s take a look at the bottom part of the shell this time.

Grab the charging port cable.

Undo the ring around the port, and run the white connector through the hole that’s closest to the center of the hoverboard. Make sure the connector has the little notch towards the bottom of the board.

Now, put the ring back onto the cable and tighten it to the shell from the inside.

Once done, grab the power button cable, and run it through the other hole in the shell. Tighten it as we did before with its little ring.

DIY Hoverboard Step 13

Next up the LED front light.

Place it in the shell and screw it into place with the two screws.

DIY Hoverboard Step 14

Then, do the same on the other side.

At this point, it’s a good idea to pick up a good silicon based glue and seal the edges of the charging port, the power button and the LED lights to weatherproof your hoverboard and ensure that nothing will come loose.

Now, grab your hoverboard frame and let’s line up the bottom shell with the ports on the side of the logic board.

Plug the charging port 4-pin cable to the 4-pin connector on the logic board itself (with the logic board on the left side, it should be the connector closest to you).

DIY Hoverboard Step 15

Now, plug the power switch cable to the 2-pin connector on the logic board.

DIY Hoverboard Step 16

Next, plug the LED front light cable into the empty connector on the attitude board. Now do the same on the other side.

DIY Hoverboard Step 17

Plug the orange battery connector to the battery cable from the logic board.

DIY Hoverboard Step 18

Finally, place the bottom shell on the frame, and screw it in place.

There you go! Now, go test out your brand new DIY hoverboard!

DIY Hoverboard Step 19

Last but not least, if you don’t feel too technically inclined, you can grab yourself a really good deal on a pre-made hoverboard here!
