Kids love hoverboards. And, each holiday season, parents have to make a tough choice when it comes to which hoverboard to buy.
There is a seemingly endless amount of listings on Amazon, with lots of great reviews and a few terrible reviews.
So how to pick the right hoverboard for your kid?
I have selected safe, UL2272 certified hoverboards for kids age 6 and up.
Safety Facts
It’s important to note that the hoverboards that did catch fire were NOT UL-certified. They were made cheaply and quickly in China, with untested battery packs. Quality checks may were been basically non-existent.
Things are now different: hoverboard companies must have a UL2272 certification for all their models. The UL certification guarantees that the battery packs are built correctly and properly sealed in case of failure.
A Quick Word on Hoverboard Age Requirements
A lot of hoverboard models have no specified age requirement, and some have an “official” age requirement of 6 or 8 years old and up.
That said, my niece is 5 and she rides her Hovertrax like a champ, so really – it depends. I definitely wouldn’t recommend a hoverboard for kids younger than 5. In any case, definitely make sure your kid learns to ride the hoverboard first and is wearing pads. For most kids, an hour in a room without any obvious hazards should suffice in giving them lots of confidence when riding.
Wheel sizes and age: a 6.5 inch wheel hoverboard (the standard diameter) is ideal for younger kids. The larger wheel sizes have quite a few benefits but they are better suited for older kids (10 and up).
Best Hoverboard for Kids: Razor Hovertrax Prizma
Razor is a big company that has been creating skateboards, scooters and toys for kids for a long time. Their original Hovertrax model was very good, and the Prizma improves upon the original.
The Prizma features the same 6.5 inch wheels that most hoverboards have. The wheels now have LED lights as well.
Design: The all-new design is clean and futuristic and I’m personally a big fan. What’s disappointing is that, at the time of writing, there’s only two colors to choose from: blue and black.
The LED lights are nice but they’re not as bright as some of the other hoverboard models.
Performance: The Hovertrax Prizma has a top speed of 9 mph (14.5 km/h). While that’s plenty fast, the motors at 150W each are much more efficient when compared to other hoverboards. Partially thanks to the lower power consumption, the Hovertrax Prizma has a fantastic battery life of 40 minutes. This is one of the longest running hoverboards you can buy right now.
Overall: Razor has been a leading company in the toys and scooters market for a long time, and while this hoverboard is a little more expensive than other models and doesn’t have the razzle dazzle of other brands, it features a great battery life and the guarantee that, should anything go wrong, you’ll have a US-based company to take care of you. Therefore this is my number one recommendation for a hoverboard for kids in 2026.
Best Bluetooth Hoverboard for Kids: TOMOLOO Music-Rhythmed Hover Board
The Tomoloo is a good all-round hoverboard. It’s not as fast as the Hovertrax Prizma, but it features Bluetooth 4.0 speakers so you can play music from your phone and great LED disco lighting that syncs to the beat of the music.
Design: A more traditional chassis for the Tomoloo, but the LED lighting is the star of the show. There’s lights on the front and back and on the wheels themselves. The music-syncing is also a bonus, and kids love it.
Performance: Not as fast as the Hovertrax Prizma with a top speed of 7.4 mph (12.0 km/h), a full battery will last you about 45 minutes when riding conservatively. When using the Bluetooth speaker and riding hard, a fully charged battery can go flat in as low as 25 minutes.
Overall: A really fun hoverboard that your kids are going to love. About the same price as the Prizma, this hoverboard trades the superior performance of the Prizma for the fun features of funky LED lights and Bluetooth speakers.
Best 10 Inch Wheel Hoverboard for Kids: Xeno Hoverboard
The Xeno is the only 10 inch wheel hoverboard on this list. It’s fast and agile. This hoverboard, with its larger wheels, is recommended for older kids (ages 10 and up) or for outdoor riding on grass and gravel. It also features Bluetooth speakers and a companion phone app that lets you select different riding modes.
Design: The shape is that of a standard 10 inch wheel hoverboard, but the 4 metallic colors are really nice. The LED lights on the front are pretty basic.
Performance: While the Xeno isn’t faster than the other hoverboards on this list, it features two powerful 250W hub motors and—when set to “expert mode” on the companion phone app—it offers a great riding experience, with instant acceleration and turning. The larger wheels also allow you to ride at top speed on uneven terrain. The battery life is excellent: we were able to ride for 3 hours. It’s also great to be able to check the remaining battery percentage on the phone app.
Overall: A fantastic performer and not very expensive, this hoverboard is ideal for older kids or kids that are stepping up from a regular 6.5 inch hoverboard.
Best Budget Hoverboard for Kids: JOLEGE Hoverboard
The Jolege is a no-frills 6.5 inch hoverboard that should make most younger kids happy.
Design: The Jolege looks like the very first hoverboard models and features 5 different matte colors. Like the newer hoverboards, though, the Jolege does feature LEDs on the wheels themselves.
Performance: Catered towards younger kids, this hoverboard does not have a specified top speed, but it seems to max out at around 6.5 mph (10.4 km/h). The battery lasts around 45 minutes.
Overall: It’s not particularly fast, the battery doesn’t last particularly long but, if budget is your primary concern when shopping for a hoverboard, you can’t go wrong with the Jolege. While most cheap hoverboards tend to have calibration problems, this one seems to work very well. And if anything were to go wrong, the Jolege customer support seems very responsive.
In Conclusion
I hope you found this buying guide useful!
If you’re not sure a hoverboard is right for your kid, you may want to look at other types of electric scooters for kids. You may find something cheaper that’s still gonna make your kid’s Christmas!
