Razor Hovertrax 2.0 Review

John Hoverboard Reviews Updated: February 10, 2024

The Hovertrax 2.0 is the newest electric hoverboard to come from the well renowned Razor brand. An innovative update on the 1st generation of the Hovertrax, this board is being called the “worlds smartest self-balancing electric scooter”. We recently got our hands on the Hovertrax 2.0 to test its new “smarts”. To see if the Hovertrax 2.0 lives up to its fancy tagline, keep reading our Razor Hovertrax Review.

Razor Hovertrax 2.0 Unboxing

The Hovertrax 2.0 board comes in several awesome color options, but we got the standard blue color. The board was shipped to us, and came in a very nice box which shows a detailed picture of the hovertrax, and all the important features. The board was nicely wrapped in a plastic sleeve, ensuring it wasn’t scuffed in transit. Also included in the box was the charging cable, and the user guide.

After opening the package, we read over the user guide. The guide gives some key info about using it for the first time. It is recommended to charge the Hovertrax for 6 hours before the first use, so we plugged it in to charge while continuing to read over the guide.

The other important information included in the user guide is all about best practices with your new hoverboard. It details how to charge the battery properly, how to operate the hoverboard, information about repair and maintenance, parts, warranty and customer service.

After we let the Hovertrax 2.0 fully charge, we were ready to test it out!

Using the Razor Hovertrax 2.0

For us, the most exciting update for the new iteration of the Hovertrax would have to be the integration of Razor’s new “EverBalance™” technology. This upgrade provides an intelligently-engineered, self-balancing experience. The results are a board that’s easier to mount (which is what most novices struggle with), and an overall smoother ride at the cost of some speed. We could certainly tell from first stepping on the board that it seemed to auto-level immediately. This automatic self balancing feature makes you feel much safer from the get go. The “EverBalance” technology is especially helpful for first time hoverboard users, making the experience a little less frustrating. Also, and this is really cool, if you push the Hovertrax or fall from it, it will keep going forward and stop itself automatically, instead of tumbling like other hoverboards, which will definitely ensure the longevity of the board.

Turning on the Hovertrax is also a little smoother, which again reinforces the credentials of this product as an entry-level hoverboard, or even a hoverboard for kids.

Riding the Razor Hovertrax 2.0

The Razor Hovertrax 2.0 also features a “training mode”. Switching the Hovertrax into training mode limits the speed and responsiveness of the controls. In training mode, the board responds a lot more slowly, and we had to lean more into the board to get the desired movement. This feature is perfect for allowing new users to get accustomed to the Hovertrax. We can tell that this update is a bonus for those who may want to let grandma have a try, though you may get less funny #hoverboardfails out of it. Whenever we got the hang of it, a simple switch puts the Hovertrax back into “normal” mode.

Another update we liked about the Hovertrax 2.0 is the two added LED panels. These not only give the board a stylish updated look, but also improved our visibility slightly when riding. The LED battery panel that lets you easily monitor the battery life as you cruise around — a very welcome update from the previous gen: since you get about an hour of battery life per charge, it’s a big bonus to be able to look down and better estimate how much time you’ll have left before recharge.

In terms of durability, the Hovertrax 2.0 has a few key updates that will improve the longevity of the board. Namely, the shatter-resistant polymer frame, and the fender bumper protection to safeguard against dings. During our extensive tests, we bumped into several curbs, rails, and jumped from the board during testing, but our Hovertrax didn’t have a scratch to show. The foot platforms also have a better anti-slip rubber coating which feels more secure than the original Hovertrax.

Razor Hovertrax 2.0 Safety

The other most important feature to consider when buying a new hoverboard would of course be the safety certification. Razor was among the first companies to obtain the UL 2272 certification. This ensures that the Hovertrax 2.0 meets or exceeds the highest fire and electrical standards. Unlike other boards, you can actually remove the battery pack from the bottom of the Hovertrax, which is also very cool: if your battery should stop working or not hold the charge any longer, you don’t have to buy a new hoverboard — just swap the battery pack.

The Razor Hovertrax 2.0 Overall

Overall the Hovertrax 2.0 is an impressive update on everything hoverboards have been up to this point. At the price point, the Hovertrax 2.0 is definitely one of the best entry level hoverboards on the market. It is perfectly suited for younger riders to get their footing. If you’re an experienced hoverboard user or you want more speed, you should definitely look elsewhere.
