The Best Electric Scooters for Kids

John Electric Scooters Updated: February 10, 2024

It’s a fact that kids love hoverboards. It may be that they’ve seen their favorite celebrity ride one on Instagram, or simply that their friend at school just got one. The fact is, a hoverboard is probably gonna be the most asked-for item this Christmas, according to Amazon.

While there is no actual age limit for an electric hoverboard, what if you’re simply not comfortable with letting them ride one?

You have a few options: here’s a list of the best electric scooters for kids.

It’s easy to use, it’s auto-leveling, it’s absolutely safe with a UL 2272 certification as well as a removable battery compartment, and best of all, it has a “learning mode” for novice hoverboard riders.
If you wanna know more about Razor’s hoverboard, check out our in-depth Hovertrax 2.0 review here. In our opinion, this hoverboard makes for the perfect Christmas gift for your kids.

If you’re not sure whether you want a hoverboard for your kids or a more children-oriented electric scooter (that’s also a bit cheaper), please keep reading further down, where you’ll find a review of the best electric scooters for children.

The Hoverboard for Kids

Can young children ride a hoverboard?

Well, it depends. Kids of all ages could actually be able to ride a regular 6.5 inch wheel hoverboard, especially if your board features a “beginner mode” which limits the max speed and makes the board easier to handle (if you wanna know how to activate “beginner mode” on your board, check out our How to Ride a Hoverboard guide). For kids under 12, though, the sheer size of the board may make the ride a little uncomfortable. Well, you’re in luck! There is a hoverboard made specifically for children. Here’s the one and only children’s hoverboard:

It features smaller, 4.5 inch wheels (as opposed to the 7 inches or 10 inches of adults’ hoverboards), and has a lower top speed of 3.1 mph (5 kmh). And it is quite a bit smaller than an adult sized hoverboard, as you can see here:

Kids Hoverboard VS Adults Hoverboard

This Mini Swagway is ideal for children, because it’s an actual underpowered, smaller version of an hoverboard, providing all the fun of a real hoverboard, but with the added safety of being closer to the ground, and, therefore, having a lower center of gravity.

Also, with this hoverboard for kids, you should remember to get some protective gear for your child: a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads.

The Dareway 12V Children’s Electric Scooter

The Dareway looks basically like a Segway for kids. The difference, of course, is that the Dareway does NOT use any self-balancing technology: instead the scooter accelerates with a foot pedal and is steered with two large buttons on the handle. To reverse, you simply press both buttons at the same time.

This electric scooter for kids is probably the safest option, as the platform itself is on four wheels, and, as such, doesn’t topple very easily.

The wheels are pretty smooth at the beginning, but with enough use, they’ll get scratched up pretty quickly. And that’s a good thing, as the wheels won’t spin quite as much when setting off.

A fun feature of the Dareway is that it comes with stickers for your children to decorate their electric scooter with.

Make sure you’re aware of the 89lbs weight limit though.

The Razor E100 Electric Scooter for Kids

Razor E100 Electric Scooter for Children

Designed for older kids, the Razor E100 is a much more grown-up electric scooter. It’s fast, with a top speed of 10mph. With this kind of speed, the Razor E100 can be an actual mode of transportation for your kid, to roam around the neighborhood, go to school or to visit a friend.

It looks cool and its no-nonsense design is pretty much perfect: you accelerate by twisting the right handle, like a motorbike, and you brake with the one lever on the left handle.

Razor E100 Handlebar

One thing to note is that the Razor E100 electric scooter only starts accelerating after your kid actually pushes the scooter. This means you can’t stand still, twist the handle and go. If this annoys you, the Razor E200 and E300 models will accelerate from a stand-still (those models also feature bigger, inflatable tires, which make for a more comfortable ride). Overall, if your kids are gonna ride their electric scooter a lot, or they’re gonna ride it on gravel/grass, you may wanna invest in the slightly more expensive Razor E300.

If your kids are older and they actually wanna go somewhere with their electric scooter, as opposed to just having a bit of fun, this is the electric scooter to pick.

So, to recap, here’s your choices based on what you are looking for in childrens’ electric scooters:
