What is the EPIKGO?
The EPIKGO is an off-road hoverboard that features innovative design features. Like all the other brands on our list of the best hoverboards for sale, it is UL 2272 certified, and completely safe.
What struck us immediately was the size of this hoverboard. The huge standing pads provide more stability, while the 8.5″ wheels allow you to conquer the roughest terrains.
The EPIKGO’s dual 400Watt motors are powerful, and they allow for riding your hoverboard at a really steep incline or over large cracks and bumps.
After spending some time with the board, we figure that the EPIKGO is a really interesting hoverboard for people who want to squeeze a little more practicality from their gadget, at the expense of weight and portability.
While the Segway miniPRO, with its massive 10″ wheels does a good job of riding over uneven terrain, it seems a little too refined for its own good. The miniPRO’s capabilities like the remote control function are neat, but they drive up the cost and don’t provide a lot of real-world benefits.
The EPIKGO takes a different approach: it WANTS to be an off-road hoverboard, and the tessellated hard rubber wheels are proof of that. It also looks more resilient than a miniPRO, and could more gracefully withstand some abuse.
While it is a fast, capable hoverboard, the EPIKGO feels a little less agile than its 6.5″ counterparts: having bigger wheels means that your center of gravity is higher, thus making you a little more unstable.
How does the EPIKGO work?
We have an article about how 6.5 “regular” hoverboards work, and it’s interesting to note that the EPIKGO takes a different approach. Instead of having electric motors inside the wheels, the motors are more conventional powerful brushless motors located inside the main body of the hoverboard. This drives the cost down and allows for more powerful motors. And having a bigger hoverboard as a result can be sold as a feature: “larger footpads for more stability”.
Conclusions
Overall we think that the EPIKGO strikes an interesting balance in terms of price point and feature set, and a lot of people will find it the answer to an untapped niche: an off-road hoverboard that does off-road right.
An excellent choice for those who are planning to use their hoverboard on dirt, grass or gravel a lot. If you’re not, you’d be better off with a Swagtron T1.
